Feedback Meetings

If you've read my blog, you probably know that I'm an "Avatar" and James Cameron fan. So, I know it's shocking that the "Avatar" fan is still talking about "Avatar". Anyways...

I'm always amazed when artists take the time and effort to try and better their artwork. Especially with mainstream artists, such as Hollywood and commercial screenwriters and directors, many of them take the position of "it's my movie, and you can like it or not." For example, this article published yesterday (3/2/23), "Quantumania Writer Doesn't Care If You Hate MODOK" is a perfect example of when artists literally, "don't care" about fan's negative opinions.

There definitely are good qualities about ignoring the negative and making art regardless of people's opinions. The problem though, is when you become defensive against critiques or fan disapprovals, you are closing the door on constructive criticism.

Also, it's worth mentioning that these Hollywood screenplay writers and directors are not the same as an individual artist selling their handmade pieces or writing a book because they want to. Hollywood is a bigger game and is unfortunately less about artistic expression and more about profits.

So I was actually surprised when I found out that James Cameron held a feedback session with "dedicated fans" to hear their unfiltered opinions about the most recent addition to the "Avatar" franchise, "Avatar: The Way of Water".

The meeting included fan's talking about elements that they didn't like about the film. Topics discussed included: plot points, frame rate, shot selection, etc. Cameron says he asked, "How do we make the next film even better for the fans?"

As a fan, I really appreciate Cameron taking time and promising to make "measurable improvements" to improve the experience for fans in the next Avatar film, which is set to be released on Dec. 20, 2024.

I would also like to see more mainstream directors in general, implement the use of feedback meetings with real fans.
